Oregon Ducks vs Michigan State Spartans: A New Rivalry in the Making
The Oregon football program is transitioning into the Big Ten conference, opening up opportunities to compete against new teams regularly. Say goodbye to the old Pac-12 regional rivals, as the Oregon Ducks gear up to face off against Midwest powerhouses like the Michigan State Spartans.
While the matchups between the Oregon Ducks and the Michigan State Spartans have been sporadic in the past, their history is nonetheless captivating. Despite the vast distance between them, these two teams have clashed seven times on the gridiron over four decades, with their first encounter dating back to 1979 in East Lansing, Michigan.
Unfortunately for the Ducks, their inaugural meeting with Michigan State ended in a 41-17 loss. However, they quickly turned the tables the following year at Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Oregon, with a resounding 35-7 victory to level the series.
After a hiatus, the Ducks and Spartans crossed paths again in the late nineties, splitting the home-and-home series in 1998 and 1999. The rivalry intensified in 2014 and 2015 with another set of home-and-home games, each home team securing a win. Interestingly, the road team has never emerged victorious in this series, except for a close 7-6 bowl game triumph for Oregon at a neutral site in Santa Clara.
With Oregon’s move to the Big Ten, fans can anticipate more frequent clashes between these two teams. Perhaps, in the near future, a road team will break the trend and claim a victory in this evolving rivalry.
