The Arizona Diamondbacks have made a major decision regarding former Los Angeles Dodgers minor league catcher Tucker Barnhart. According to a report by Nick Piecoro from the Arizona Republic, Barnhart has been designated for assignment, sending him back to waivers right before his team’s upcoming game against the Dodgers.
Throughout this season, Barnhart has struggled, hitting a career-low in both batting average and slugging percentage. In 31 games, he maintained a .173 batting average, .287 slugging percentage, with 14 hits, 13 runs, zero home runs, and six RBIs.
Before joining the Diamondbacks in January, Barnhart had a significant tenure with the Cincinnati Reds, where he made his debut in 2014 and stayed until 2020. During his time with the Reds, he earned two Gold Glove awards. Following his stint with the Reds, Barnhart had brief tenures with the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs. However, he was released mid-season by the Cubs in 2023. Subsequently, he signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers, only to become a free agent at the end of the year.
In 2023, while playing for the Oklahoma City Dodgers, Barnhart appeared in seven games and recorded a .227 batting average, .370 slugging percentage, with five hits, four runs, and one RBI. Throughout his major league career, Barnhart has maintained a .241 batting average, .318 slugging percentage, hitting 53 home runs and driving in 292 RBIs.
