Iran has refuted any involvement in the recent attempted assassination of former US President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. The country also denied any “intention for such an action,” dismissing allegations as having politically motivated objectives. This development follows reports by The Washington Post that the Biden administration had alerted the Secret Service of a threat from Iran to Trump before the July 13 rally. Nonetheless, US officials believe the attack, which resulted in one fatality and two critical injuries, and Trump’s claim of being shot in the ear, were not connected to any Iranian efforts.
In response to these claims, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani issued a statement strongly rejecting any connection to the attack on Trump and the allegations regarding Iran’s intentions. It was emphasized that such accusations are driven by malicious political motives.
US intelligence has previously cautioned about potential retaliatory actions from Iran in response to the killing of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani in a US drone strike authorized by Trump in 2020. Trump justified the military action as a measure to prevent a war rather than incite one. Additionally, in 2018, Trump withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal and imposed sanctions that adversely affected the country’s economy.
Iran’s U.N. mission labeled Trump as a “criminal” deserving of prosecution for Soleimani’s assassination. The country has opted for legal avenues seeking justice, including potentially petitioning the International Court of Justice over the matter.
The US National Security Council reiterated its vigilance against Iranian threats towards former Trump administration officials, characterizing it as a critical national security concern. Measures have been taken to bolster security for Trump in response to the Iran-related threat alert, with enhanced protections implemented by the Secret Service.
Efforts are ongoing to unravel the motives behind the actions of Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old individual who opened fire at the rally in Bethel Park, Pa. Authorities are investigating the incident to uncover any possible connections or reasons for the attack.
