According to reports this morning, Newcastle United are now exploring a deal for OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.
Both Alex Crook at talkSPORT and HITC’s Graeme Bailey report that we’ve held talks with the French international over a potential move to St James’ Park, with Paul Mitchell believed to be driving our pursuit of the 24-year-old.
Todibo ticks boxes as a right-sided centre-back who is young, mobile and good on the ball, but talkSPORT suggests that the player is ‘unlikely to sign at this stage.’
West Ham struck a £33m agreement with Nice over the weekend and he’s also received serious interest from Juventus, who have agreed terms with the Frenchman but are yet to strike a deal with the Ligue 1 side.
Man Utd have also shown interest in the centre-back, but the INEOS link across the two clubs would block them from signing Todibo.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Newcastle scouts were watching the Ligue 1 defender last summer and it seems like we’ve been admirers for some time. However, it remains to be seen if we’ve actually made our move, as this does seem like an easy story to write given his availability, Mitchell’s contacts in France and our need for a right-sided centre-back.
#NUFC have held talks with Jean-Clair Todibo. Interest driven by new sporting director Paul Mitchell. Player unlikely to sign at this stage.
