The Deforestation Crisis in Şirnak: Urgent Call for Action
In the regions of Gabar, Cûdî, Çilenimêja and Komatê in Şirnak, the alarming practice of tree cutting is ongoing without any signs of stopping. With this in mind, environmental organizations are gearing up to convene in the city on 28 July to bring to light and denounce the wanton destruction of nature.
The Mesopotamia Ecology Movement is taking the lead in organizing this pivotal meeting, rallying around the urgent message of “Stop the massacre of nature”.
In a statement, Adnan Şenbayram, the spokesperson of Şirnak Ecology Movement, underscored the gravity of the situation: “The wanton destruction of the environment has been an ongoing issue in Şirnak for an extended period of time. However, this destruction has seen a sharp and worrying escalation, notably in Cudî, Gabar, Besta, and in the Komatê region of Beytüşşebap. It is evident that this destruction is primarily manifesting through the senseless cutting down of trees. There is a deliberate and systematic targeting of Şirnak, and it is imperative for us to stand in solidarity and raise our voices against these anti-environmental policies of the government. We urge the public, communities, and advocates of nature and life to unite and participate in the press conference that we will be holding in Şirnak on 28 July. Our collective resistance is crucial in combating these destructive government policies that are detrimental to our environment.”
It is clear that immediate action is necessary to address the dire consequences of deforestation in Şirnak. The resilience of the region’s ecosystems is at stake, and the time to act is now. Let us stand together in solidarity to protect and preserve our natural heritage.
