CHRISTOPHER KHAN upset Denney Estava yesterday to advance to the Under-14 semi-finals of the COTECC (Central America and the Caribbean Tennis Confederation)-sanctioned Summer Bowl Junior Tournament at the National Racquet Centre, in Tacarigua.
Last year’s Under-12 champion edged the St Lucian 7-6 (7/4), 6-7 (3/7), 6-4, while Tobagonian Jaysean Wells defeated last year’s national Under-12 champ Jack Brown in the other quarter-final match on the top half of the draw.
Josiah Hills and Nirav Dougdeen have ended up on the same side of the draw and they will clash in today’s semis, instead of tomorrow’s final.
Hills only allowed Novak Malcolm one game in yesterday’s quarters, while Dougdeen was a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Jacob Jacelon.
When the arch-rivals last met in the 16 & under final of the Sagicor Junior Tournament last month, Hills, who had won the Under-14 and 16 titles in the Lease Operators Limited Junior Tournament in June, prevailed in a deciding match tiebreak after they had split two sets.
Estava reached the “Sagicor” 14 & under final, but Khan was upset in the quarters by Malcolm. Lilly Mohammed and Makeda Bain, 16 & under champion and runner-up, respectively, in “Sagicor”, received byes into today’s Under-14 semis.
“Lease” Under-14 and 16 champ Bain will come up against Cyra Ramcharan, who defeated Mohammed’s sister Karissa —the “Sagicor” Under-14 champ— 6-2, 6-3 in yesterday’s quarters.
And Khan’s sister Madison, the national age-group champ, tackles Lilly after a 6-2, 7-5 triumph over Ramcharan’s younger sister Suri, yesterday. First serve today is 9 a.m.
