Recent reports confirm that Walgreens is planning to close a substantial number of its stores nationwide, with potential closures in Vermont.
After the parent company, Walgreens Boots Alliance, revealed this plan in its 2024 third-quarter fiscal results, the pharmacy chain officially announced these closures in an email statement to USA TODAY on Thursday morning.
A spokesperson for Walgreens explained that the company is strategically repositioning its store footprint, with approximately 25% of its current stores not aligning with the chain’s long-term vision.
As part of a multi-year optimization program, Walgreens aims to close a significant portion of these underperforming locations over the next three years, as outlined in the company’s fiscal report.
What is the Scope of Walgreens Store Closures?
Walgreens’ CEO, Tim Wentworth, mentioned to the Wall Street Journal that the final number of closures has not been determined yet.
Currently, Walgreens operates around 8,700 stores across 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as stated on their website.
In previous years, Walgreens has shuttered 150 and 200 stores in 2023 and 2019, respectively.
Impact of Walgreens Store Closures in Vermont
Vermont currently hosts 27 Walgreens locations.
Over the past years, Vermont has experienced several Walgreens pharmacy closures, including the downtown Burlington store closure in November of the previous year and the shutdown of the Morrisville branch in March 2023.
