Home Minority Chief Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Thursday pushed again sharply towards a report that he has discouraged members of his caucus from visiting El Salvador to spotlight the Trump administration’s mistaken deportation of a Maryland resident to a infamous jail there.
Chatting with reporters within the Capitol, Jeffries mentioned the report, revealed by the Bulwark earlier within the week, was patently false, though he stopped in need of endorsing such visits — previous or future.
“In terms of the report that alleged that members of House Democratic leadership had some phantom conversation with either the members who took a trip to El Salvador — or any other members — that is a complete and total fabrication,” Jeffries mentioned. “The one assertion that was made to members who went to El Salvador was, ‘Welcome again, we’re glad you will have returned safely.’”
The controversy over the destiny of Kilmar Abrego Garcia has divided Democrats on Capitol Hill since he was deported from Maryland to an El Salvadoran jail in the midst of March. Abrego Garcia had entered the nation illegally years in the past. However he was allegedly a goal of gang violence at house, and after an arrest in 2019, a decide blocked his deportation, citing issues about his bodily security if he had been compelled to return — a transfer that allowed him to reside and work within the U.S. legally.
