Approximately 60 firefighters responded to a blaze at a hospital in Paddington, west London, on Thursday afternoon.
According to the London Fire Brigade (LFB), a storeroom on the ground floor of the St Mary’s Hospital building located on Winsland Street was engulfed in flames.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the fire was contained by around 12:35 BST. However, as a safety measure, the building was evacuated, the LFB confirmed. An investigation into the cause of the blaze is currently underway.
Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust disclosed that 50 patients were relocated from three wards that were impacted by smoke.
The London Ambulance Service deployed an ambulance along with members of its Hazardous Area Response Team to the location during the evacuation process.
There were no injuries requiring medical attention resulting from the incident.
The NHS trust expressed its sincere apologies for the disruption and anxiety caused by the fire in the Clarence/Cambridge building.
Karen Powell, the director of St Mary’s Hospital, stated, “I want to extend my gratitude to all our staff who played a role in managing this incident – they provided exceptional care for our patients under very trying conditions.
“We are also extremely thankful to the London Fire Brigade and appreciate the support of our patients and visitors during this time.”
