During his visit to the Kremlin on Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed support for Russia in the face of “hegemonic bullying,” coinciding with Moscow’s preparations to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
A significant number of foreign leaders, more than twenty, have gathered in the Russian capital for the annual military parade scheduled for Friday, with Xi being the most distinguished guest during this year’s events.
“Amid the global trend of unilateralism and hegemonic oppression, China is committed to collaborating with Russia to fulfill the unique responsibilities of major global powers,” Xi conveyed to Putin, as reported by the Kremlin.
The Chinese president acknowledged the strengthening of “political mutual trust” and the growth of cooperation between their nations.
In response, Putin remarked that Moscow and Beijing are “developing our relations for the benefit of both nations’ peoples and are not adversarial towards anyone.”
Xi’s visit occurred against the backdrop of Ukraine’s accusation that Russia breached a 72-hour ceasefire, which Putin had unilaterally declared ahead of the military parade in Red Square.
While Beijing has positioned itself as an impartial participant in the conflict, Western nations criticize China for buoying Russia both economically and diplomatically.
