The publication Variety has released an article discussing Hollywood cinema in Russia. The reporters spoke with industry representatives about their views on the Russian market, especially in light of the release of the action film “Ballerina” by Lionsgate in the country.
An anonymous source from the company indicated that Lionsgate will continue to make decisions regarding the release of films based on the current situation—previously, “John Wick 4” was released in Russia, and “Now You See Me 3” is set to premiere this fall.
Representatives from major studios like Disney, Universal, Paramount, and Warner Bros. are currently not prepared to discuss a full return to Russia. As a result, new releases such as “Mission: Impossible” and “Fantastic Four” are expected to reach the country only through unofficial channels. However, these companies also believe that a return is “inevitable.”
At present, Russia remains one of the most significant markets for independent cinema. The country continues to rank among the top-grossing markets for studios like A24 (“Fall of Empire”), Neon (“Anora”), and FilmNation (“One Life”). Before the exit of major studios, Russia accounted for 5-6% of total box office earnings, and many production companies are planning to re-enter the market amid a decline in revenues in China and other parts of the world.
