In response to recent reductions in NASA’s budget under the Trump administration, Japan has reaffirmed its unwavering dedication to lunar exploration. Hiroshi Yamakawa, President of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), recently highlighted Japan’s ambition to become a leading force in moon research and development. He stressed that the Moon offers not only vast scientific potential but also strategic value for future space endeavors.

Japan is targeting the establishment of a sustainable lunar base by the late 2020s, focusing on long-term human activities on the Moon’s surface. This vision remains firm despite uncertainties surrounding international space funding dynamics.

Upcoming Robotic Missions Paving Way for Human Presence

To lay groundwork for manned missions, JAXA plans several robotic expeditions designed to explore and prepare key lunar regions:

  • SLIM (Smart Lander for Investigating Moon): Launched in late 2022, this mission aims to demonstrate pinpoint landing capabilities critical for future crewed landings.
  • Lunar Polar Exploration Vehicle (LP-V): Scheduled for deployment around 2025, LP-V will investigate permanently shadowed craters near the lunar poles—areas believed to harbor water ice essential for sustained habitation.
