The Barbican Centre in London has revealed new design concepts as it prepares to renovate three of its iconic areas: the conservatory, the lakeside, and the foyers.
These proposed enhancements, which feature a new water element, are part of a broader revitalization initiative, with construction slated to commence in 2027.
The aim is to finalize the improvements two years prior to the Barbican’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2030.
In a previous announcement, the cultural landmark, designated as Grade II listed and inaugurated in 1982, recognized that the structure had “declined considerably” over the years.
Following a consultation earlier this year where over 90% of participants endorsed the initial plans, the designs have undergone revisions.
The Centre engaged two co-design groups, including participants aged 18-30, in this reworking of the plans.
Proposed changes encompass upgrades to the lakeside terrace and a redesign of the foyers to enhance inclusivity and facility quality.
Philippa Simpson, Director of Buildings and Renewal, expressed, “We have been truly inspired by the public’s interest in our proposals.”
