Kazakhstan national team and FC Astana defender, Marat Bystrov, shared the reasons behind his decision to join the army at the beginning of his football career.

– You didn’t achieve high-level play on your first attempt.
– At one point, I decided to try out for Perm’s Oktan from the Second League. I thought that if it worked out, I would stay to play; if not, I would be done with football. I spent a week at the club, but things weren’t going well, so I returned home. I simply took my draft notice and enlisted in the army. I informed my family, then turned off my phone and cut off all contact. I spent one or two months coming to terms with it.

– Was it depression?
– Perhaps it was. I realized that I’d be 22 by the time I finished my service, which meant my chances of making it to the Second League were slim. Back then, that league was much stronger than it is now. At that age, after a year of inactivity, it often feels like the end. I struggled with my feelings but accepted the reality. The army is truly a schooling experience for a man. It brought me calmness and discipline. Everything operates on a schedule, and all decisions are made for you. Your opinions don’t matter. In those moments, you realize how many opportunities and choices you have in everyday life. It was tough at times, but the army was good for me. It builds character. Hazing? I was fortunate with my unit. I still keep in touch with the guys, – Bystrov said in an exclusive interview…
