Potential Putin-Zelensky Summit Hinges on Unspecified Agreements

The Kremlin announced on Saturday that there is a possibility for Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet with Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky in the future, contingent upon reaching certain agreements.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov did not detail what agreements would be necessary from Russia’s perspective. The last encounter between Putin and Zelensky occurred in December 2019.

Zelensky recently invited the Kremlin leader to meet with him in Turkey during this week, but Putin opted instead to dispatch a delegation of aides and officials to engage in direct discussions with Ukrainian negotiators on Friday, marking the first face-to-face talks since March 2022.

During these discussions, Ukraine brought up the topic of a potential meeting between Putin and Zelensky.

Peskov indicated that Russia views a meeting between the two leaders as possible but only after tangible progress has been made in the form of agreements.

He noted, “At the same time, the crucial and fundamental issue for us remains who will sign these agreements on the Ukrainian side.”

Peskov did not provide further clarity on that statement. Putin has previously questioned Zelensky’s legitimacy as president, arguing that his term was expected to end last year.

As Ukraine remains under martial law in its defense against Russia, no date has been set for new elections.
