Lock keepers on the River Thames have decided to initiate strike action in response to safety issues linked to a shortage of personnel, according to their union.
At present, the Environment Agency has 52 trained staff members stationed along the river, while the GMB Union argues that this number should be increased to 90 during peak times.
The Environment Agency has been asked to provide a statement regarding this matter.
The GMB reported an impressive turnout of 98% in the vote, with 90% opting in favor of the strike.
Kevin Brandstatter, a national officer with the GMB, stated, “Our River Thames weir and lock keepers are committed and enthusiastic employees. They interact closely with those who use the river and have no desire to strike.”
“However, with only 52 individuals handling the responsibilities of 90, the situation is unsafe,” he emphasized.
He noted that staff have exerted exceptional effort to ensure safety, yet “enough is enough.”
“They have garnered support from boaters, river enthusiasts, residents along the river, and hikers,” he continued. “At this point, they believe that halting their work is the only way to effectively communicate their concerns to the Environment Agency.”
