A missile attack by Russia on a Ukrainian military training site resulted in the deaths of at least 12 soldiers and left dozens more injured on Sunday, according to reports from Kyiv, marking an unusual acknowledgment of military casualties.
While the exact location of the strike was not disclosed, Ukrainian officials emphasized that the soldiers were not engaged in any “mass gathering,” with many being in their shelters at the time of the assault.
In recent weeks, the Ukrainian military has faced calls to examine what some describe as significant failures in ensuring the safety of soldiers in training.
Last month, six soldiers were killed by a Russian missile strike near the border, an incident that one Ukrainian opposition figure labeled a “crime” committed by military leadership.
“In a statement released today, June 1, the Ukrainian army reported that the enemy had conducted a missile strike targeting one of its training units,” they noted.
“By 12:50 p.m., it was confirmed that 12 individuals had died and over 60 were injured.”
“The statement further indicated that if it is determined that the deaths and injuries of the servicemen resulted from the actions or negligence of officials, those accountable will face severe consequences.”
