Russian and U.S. officials may convene “very soon” for another session of discussions intended to restore the functioning of their diplomatic missions, stated Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov on Tuesday.
Representatives from the two nations previously held embassy discussions on February 27 and April 10 in Istanbul, Turkey, following a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Saudi Arabia on February 18.
Ryabkov mentioned, “We are approaching the third round of bilateral talks to address outstanding issues. While it’s premature to announce an exact date, I anticipate that these discussions will occur quite soon,” as reported by the Interfax news agency.
He expressed that Moscow is seeking “clearer responses” to its suggestion to resume direct flights between Russia and the United States, along with Washington’s return of six Russian-owned properties that were confiscated between 2016 and 2018 due to accusations of election interference.
The topic of restoring direct flights was first brought up by Russia during discussions with American officials in Istanbul on February 27, as the incoming Trump administration showed interest in improving ties with Moscow.
It appears that U.S. officials indicated that any restoration of direct flights would depend on advancements towards a ceasefire in Ukraine, according to statements from the Kremlin.
