Over 20 individuals were apprehended in London as police addressed a demonstration advocating for the banned organization Palestine Action.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that those detained are suspected of violating the Terrorism Act 2000 and are currently in custody.
Images from the protest in Westminster captured a small contingent displaying signs that read “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.”
As of Saturday, the group has been officially prohibited under the Terrorism Act 2000 after legal representatives seeking to challenge the ban were unsuccessful in court on Friday.
This classification renders membership in or any form of support for Palestine Action a criminal offense, potentially resulting in sentences of up to 14 years.
Earlier, the Met stated: “Officers are responding to a protest supporting Palestine Action in Parliament Square. The group is now proscribed, and showing support for them constitutes a criminal act.”
The government’s decision to outlaw the group followed an incident last month where approximately £7 million worth of damage was inflicted on aircraft at RAF Brize Norton, which Palestine Action claimed responsibility for.
Home Secretary Yvette Cooper revealed intentions to ban the group last month, denouncing the damage to two military planes as “disgraceful” and asserting that the group has a “long history of unacceptable criminal damage.”
