On Thursday, the Kremlin dismissed claims that Russia or its affiliates have deployed drones to surveil the movement of U.S. and allied weapon supplies in eastern Germany.
U.S. officials informed The New York Times that they suspect either Russian forces or agents from its intelligence services of operating drones over supply routes in Thuringia, a German state.
Defense analysts propose that Moscow might be trying to gather information about arms manufacturers and logistics related to deliveries heading to Ukraine via Poland, data that could facilitate potential sabotage activities across Europe, according to the newspaper.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated to reporters that he had not seen the report but outright dismissed its claims.
“It’s difficult to believe, as the Germans would undoubtedly have noticed and would have spoken out. This appears to be just another fabricated media story,” Peskov remarked.
A representative from Germany’s armed forces mentioned to the business magazine Wirtschaftswoche that Berlin views the reported drone flights as a significant security threat, which has led to the installation of anti-drone systems at military bases in the area.
