A 7.4-magnitude earthquake occurred near Russia’s Far East Kamchatka peninsula on Saturday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) reported that there was no tsunami threat resulting from the earthquake.

The USGS indicated that the earthquake struck 111 kilometers (69 miles) east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative hub of the Kamchatka region, at a depth of 39.5 kilometers.

Although the initial reports from the survey rated the earthquake at 7.5 in magnitude, this was later revised downwards.

Initially, the PTWC cautioned that “hazardous” waves reaching up to one meter (3.3 feet) could impact certain nearby Russian coastlines.

However, the center subsequently announced that the tsunami risk had diminished.

In July, Kamchatka experienced one of its most powerful earthquakes on record, which generated tsunamis as high as four meters throughout the Pacific and led to evacuations extending from Hawaii to Japan.

The magnitude 8.8 earthquake was the most significant since 2011, when a magnitude 9.1 quake off Japan’s coast caused a tsunami that resulted in over 15,000 fatalities.

Following the July tremor, Japanese authorities directed nearly two million residents to seek higher ground.
