The general secretary of the union responsible for last week’s Tube strikes expressed a sense of “optimism” regarding the potential for an agreement with Transport for London (TfL), but cautioned transport leaders against responding with indifference.
From September 7 to 12, services were nearly nonexistent due to a series of walkouts by members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union.
Eddie Dempsey shared his thoughts on BBC Radio London, stating, “I feel hopeful, nearly optimistic, but I have witnessed negotiations go awry in the past. I believe we can achieve progress in these discussions.”
While TfL has been asked for a statement, they have previously labeled the union’s demand for a 32-hour workweek as “unaffordable.”
The transport authority has proposed a 3.4% pay increase and has extended an invitation to the union for talks scheduled on Wednesday.
The RMT initiated this strike action over salary issues and their unmet 32-hour workweek request, which calls for a reduction of three hours.
On Monday, there was nearly a 33% increase in Elizabeth line usage, while cycle-hire usage surged by 93% by Wednesday, and Uber Boat services by Thames Clippers saw a 70% increase throughout the week.
The London Overground and bus services also witnessed a significant uptick in usage as residents sought alternative transportation options during the strike.
