Latvia’s State Security Service (VDD) announced on Wednesday that they have detained a citizen on suspicion of espionage for Russia.
The government of the Baltic nation stated that the unnamed Latvian individual had relayed the locations and security measures of Latvian and NATO forces to contacts within Russia.
“The information available to VDD indicates that this individual has also provided additional intelligence to the Russian intelligence and security services that could jeopardize Latvia’s national security and that of other Baltic nations,” the VDD said in a statement.
A criminal investigation has been initiated, and authorities noted that the suspect has been in custody since late August.
Tensions have surged between Russia and Latvia, as well as with other neighboring Baltic states, following Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
In recent years, authorities across the Baltic region have detained individuals they allege were acting as spies for Russia. For instance, an Estonian court convicted Russian political science professor Vyacheslav Morozov last year, sentencing him to six years in prison on espionage charges.
