A Moscow court has issued in absentia prison sentences to five members of the exiled feminist protest group Pussy Riot due to allegations related to their anti-war performances, as reported by the news outlet Mediazona on Monday.

Maria Alyokhina, Taso Pletner, Olga Borisova, Diana Burkot, and Alina Petrova faced accusations of disseminating “false information” regarding the Russian military in a music video titled “Mama, Don’t Watch TV,” released in December 2022.

Additionally, they were charged with performing “indecent acts” involving a portrait of President Vladimir Putin during a show in Munich, Germany, in April 2024, where one member urinated on an image of the Russian leader.

The Basmanny District Court in Moscow found all five women guilty of the charges.

Alyokhina, recognized as the most prominent member, received the longest sentence of 13 years and 15 days, while Pletner was handed an 11-year term, and the other three women were sentenced to nine years each.

Prison sentences delivered in absentia typically come into effect following the extradition of the individual to Russia.

The five Pussy Riot members, through their legal representatives, have stated that they deny the charges and view their sentences as politically motivated.
