NEW YORK (AP) — Miles Mykkanen grew up eager to sing and dance on Broadway, however he was turned down by the musical theater applications he utilized to for school. So he needed to “settle” for learning opera on the Juilliard Faculty at Lincoln Middle.
“At 18, when your sights are set on 42nd Street and then you’re getting called to 65th Street, it was weirdly a letdown,” he recalled. “But after a few hours I kind of slapped myself and said ‘Miles, pull yourself together.’”
That was 16 years in the past, and he has since pulled himself collectively to such an extent that at age 34 he’s simply opened the Metropolitan Opera season in a number one position in a brand new opera, “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.”
With a libretto by Gene Scheer and rating by Mason Bates, the opera relies on the novel by Michael Chabon. Mykkanen portrays Sammy Clay, a Jewish child rising up in World Conflict II-era Brooklyn who groups along with his cousin, Czech refugee Joe Kavalier, to create a comic book strip hero modeled on Superman.
He’ll even be again on the Met within the spring in one other fashionable opera, Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho’s “Innocence.” He performs the Bridegroom, an element he first sang in 2024 when San Francisco Opera gave the work’s U.S. premiere.
