U.S. military officials traveled to Belarus to observe the Zapad-2025 joint military drills conducted by Russia and Belarus, according to a statement from the Belarusian defense ministry on Monday.
“We will gladly show you everything you wish to see. You can explore and engage with our personnel,” said Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin during his meeting with the American officers at the Borisovsky training facility in the Minsk region.
Footage released by the ministry featured two U.S. Air Force officers, both holding the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, greeting Khrenin, with one expressing gratitude in Russian. These officers have been recognized as American military attachés.
Reuters noted that the U.S. officials chose not to engage with reporters. There has been no immediate response from U.S. officials regarding the visit.
The Zapad-2025 exercises commenced on Friday and are scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, focusing on assessing the military readiness of Belarus and Russia to defend against an invasion and reclaim lost territories.
Belarus has extended invitations to observers from nine NATO countries and other nations to ensure “transparency and openness” during these drills.
On Monday, the Belarusian Defense Ministry announced that representatives from Turkey and Hungary were among those present, increasing the total number of participating foreign nations to 23.
