These actions not only reduce the effectiveness of therapy but can also lead to serious complications. ENT specialist Murad Kurbanov identified three common and dangerous mistakes that Russians make when treating a cold.

The first and most hazardous mistake, according to the doctor, is self-medicating with antibiotics. The expert clarified that acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI) are caused by viruses, making these medications ineffective against them. Uncontrolled use of antibiotics can lead to bacterial resistance, allergic reactions, and disruptions in the intestinal microbiome.

The second prevalent mistake is overusing vasoconstrictor nasal drops. The specialist advises limiting their use to no more than five to seven days; otherwise, there is a risk of developing dependence and rhinitis medicamentosa — a condition where normal nasal breathing becomes impossible without the drops.

The third dangerous behavior is trying to push through the illness. The doctor emphasizes that recovery requires rest and adequate hydration. Lack of sleep and dehydration can exacerbate intoxication, weaken the immune system, and significantly hinder the recovery process.
