The number of fatalities resulting from the explosion at a military facility in the Chelyabinsk region of central Russia earlier this month has increased to 23, officials announced on Wednesday after concluding their search and rescue efforts.
Authorities have not disclosed the cause of the blast that occurred on October 22 in Kopeysk, but they have initiated an investigation into potential violations of industrial safety regulations.
“The final tally of victims from this disaster is 23 individuals,” the regional government stated on Telegram, revising their previous figures of 13 deceased and 10 unaccounted for.
Footage on social media captured a fireball bursting into the night sky over the Plastmass factory, which manufactures explosives, including those used by the Russian military.
The blast completely destroyed one of the buildings at the facility. Rescuers dedicated a week to sifting through the debris in search of survivors and remains.
Investigators have rebutted claims suggesting that the incident was the result of a drone strike from Ukraine.
