Well-known sports journalist and commentator Gennady Orlov shared his thoughts on the resignation of the chief coach of the Russian national team, Valery Karpin, from a similar position at FC Dynamo Moscow.
“I’m not surprised at all by Karpin’s departure. It seems he’s unaware of the Russian proverb: if you chase two hares, you’ll catch neither. That’s exactly what happened. No one understood what Karpin was trying to accomplish at Dynamo. He even complained that the players didn’t understand him. What kind of coach are you if your footballers can’t grasp your ideas? It’s his job to communicate effectively with them.
Honestly, I don’t get why Dynamo chose Karpin. Who told them he was a great coach? Has he shown this through his work? What positions did his team Rostov finish in while he was there? Glebov and then Osipenko moved from Rostov to Dynamo. Are they now the stars of Dynamo? Certainly not. This indicates that the coach isn’t evaluating his players correctly. The same issues are evident with the national team.
The management at Dynamo seems to have a misguided notion that Karpin is an exceptional coach. Where has he proven himself, when, and in what ways?
The club has the financial resources, but I don’t understand the criteria they used for their selection. What’s their motivation? Perhaps they removed Gafin because he allowed this overlap to happen,” Orlov stated in an interview with Championat correspondent Oleg Lysenko.
