On Wednesday, President Vladimir Putin and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi celebrated the installation of the first reactor at Egypt’s first nuclear power facility, marking one of the largest collaborative ventures between their nations in recent decades.
The two leaders participated in the ceremony via videoconference, with Putin describing the reactor installation as a “successful” milestone in the development of the El Dabaa plant, which is situated approximately 300 kilometers (187 miles) northwest of Cairo.
“We are entering a crucial phase in equipping the station with technology, and it will soon be capable of producing electricity,” Putin stated in his televised address.
El-Sisi emphasized that the project would enhance Egypt’s energy security.
Initiated under a 2015 intergovernmental agreement, the construction of El Dabaa is being facilitated by Russia’s state-owned nuclear corporation, Rosatom. Once completed, the facility is projected to house four reactors with a total capacity of 4.8 gigawatts, which would satisfy about 10% of Egypt’s electricity needs.
Rosatom is also providing reactor fuel, technical assistance, and training to support the project. Putin noted that Egyptian companies have undertaken 55% of the construction and subcontracting, leading to job creation and the establishment of a local nuclear industry.
