Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett has been bestowed with the Freedom of the City of London in acknowledgment of her “exceptional contributions to the world of drama” and her advocacy for humanitarian and global environmental causes.

The Australian actress, 55, who serves as a global goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, attended the ceremony at Guildhall on Friday, accompanied by numerous guests with backgrounds as refugees.

After the event, Blanchett remarked, “I hold this honor dear from a city and nation known for its tradition of hospitality and opportunity.

“London is a vibrant hub where individuals from across the globe come to find a sense of belonging.”

She emphasized that London has historically been a refuge for those escaping persecution.

“For countless refugees, London symbolizes a fresh start—providing safety, hope, and a sense of belonging after enduring hardship and displacement. I accept this honor in their names.”

Blanchett has clinched two Oscars for her performances in The Aviator (2005) and Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine (2014).

Her breakthrough came with her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 film Elizabeth, and she has since appeared in acclaimed works such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Ocean’s 8, Carol, Notes on a Scandal, and Tar.

She has also graced the stage, returning to London’s theater scene for a new adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull.
