Four South Africans Detained for Allegedly Planning to Join Russian Military Forces

South African authorities have detained four men at Johannesburg’s airport, who are believed to have intended to join the Russian military, according to a statement from the police on Saturday.

This development follows reports that law enforcement is looking into allegations against a daughter of former president Jacob Zuma for her purported role in recruiting individuals to fight alongside Russian mercenaries in Ukraine.

The four men were apprehended at O.R. Tambo International Airport on Thursday and Friday, acting on a tip-off, and are scheduled to appear in court near Johannesburg on Monday.

Authorities suspect that they have violated South Africa’s laws concerning participation in foreign military forces without the necessary government approval.

“The initial investigation has indicated that a South African woman was allegedly aiding in the travel and recruitment of these persons into the military of the Russian Federation,” stated a report from the specialized HAWKS unit managing the inquiry.

Last week, police announced they were investigating claims that Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, Zuma’s daughter and a member of parliament from his Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party, had recruited 17 South African men to Russia “to participate in the Ukrainian conflict without their awareness or consent.”

Zuma-Sambudla stepped down from her parliamentary position following the emergence of these allegations.
