Four individuals have been detained following an incident where custard and apple crumble were thrown at a display case housing part of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London.
Authorities received a call just before 10:00 GMT on Saturday after the case featuring the Imperial State Crown was vandalized.
The Metropolitan Police announced that four individuals were apprehended on suspicion of causing criminal damage, and the Jewel House at the Tower has been closed to visitors as the investigation proceeds.
The group calling itself Take Back Power, which identifies as a new non-violent civil resistance movement, has claimed responsibility for the act.
They stated that the purpose of the demonstration was to urge the UK government to create a permanent citizens’ assembly—a “House of the People”—that would be empowered to “tax extreme wealth and repair Britain”.
Videos released by the group on social media captured one protester removing a large foil tray of crumble from a bag and forcefully hitting it against the glass encasing the Imperial State Crown. Another protester subsequently poured a container of bright yellow custard over the front of the display.
“Democracy has crumbled,” one protester exclaimed, while another shouted, “Britain is broken. We’ve come here to the jewels of the nation to reclaim power.”
Surprised onlookers reacted to the demonstration, as a staff member at the Tower of London communicated via radio.
