A newly envisioned community garden has been established to pay tribute to Damilola Taylor, who tragically lost his life at the age of 10 due to a stabbing incident.

This initiative, brought to life by local teenagers from Peckham in southeast London and Ghanaian artist Godfried Donkor, is named the Garden of Hope. It will feature planting beds, areas for seating, and a mural that incorporates traditional West African Adinkra symbols.

On November 27, 2000, while returning home from the library in Peckham Square, Damilola was attacked with a broken bottle, suffering a stab wound to the leg. He managed to reach a stairwell in the North Peckham Estate, where he ultimately collapsed and passed away.

The garden’s design symbolizes resilience, unity, and fresh starts, and its unveiling coincided with what would have been Damilola’s 36th birthday.

The impact of Damilola’s death resonated throughout the nation, sparking discussions about youth violence, law enforcement, and opportunities available to young people in urban environments.

Now, 25 years later, this garden commemorates the life of the young boy.

The unveiling represented a significant moment that many community members described as “painful yet vital to recognize.”

Organizers from the Damilola Taylor Trust, along with Southwark Council, expressed their intention to honor Damilola’s legacy while providing young individuals with a peaceful and creative environment in the center of Peckham.
