The acclaimed rapper Ghetts has confessed to being involved in a hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of a young man in north-east London.
The artist, whose real name is Justin Clarke-Samuel, neglected to stop after his BMW struck 20-year-old Yubin Tamang in Ilford back in October.
Clarke-Samuel is also facing accusations of causing death through careless driving while above the legal alcohol limit, in addition to a charge of dangerous driving linked to another event on the same day.
The 41-year-old from Woodford, east London, entered a guilty plea for causing the death of Mr. Tamang through dangerous driving. His sentencing is scheduled for February 12, when the additional charges will also be addressed, according to the court.
The court was informed that after the tragic incident in Ilford around 23:30 GMT, Clarke-Samuel continued to drive recklessly on Worcester Crescent in Redbridge while traveling back home to Woodford.
Authorities arrived at the defendant’s residence in Woodford early the following morning.
The black BMW, which was registered and insured under Clarke-Samuel’s name, bore considerable damage.
Ghetts, a Mercury Prize-nominated grime MC, rapper, and songwriter, has collaborated with notable artists such as Stormzy, Ed Sheeran, and Skepta.
He received the award for Best Male Act at the MOBO Awards in 2021 and was honored with the MOBO Pioneer Award in 2024 for his “substantial contributions to British black culture.”
