The last private hospital providing abortion services in Siberia’s Altai Republic is required to relinquish its license by the end of 2025, as stated by regional leader Andrei Turchak on Tuesday. This move is part of state initiatives aimed at tackling a significant drop in birth rates throughout Russia.

Turchak mentioned on Telegram that “eight out of nine private clinics in the Altai Republic have voluntarily stopped offering abortion services.”

He added, “The owners of Evromedtsentr still have sufficient time to follow the lead of their peers and surrender their abortion license by the year’s end.”

Turchak did not specify what penalties, if any, the clinic could encounter for non-compliance with his directives.

While abortion remains legal in Russia, Altai is one of over 20 regions implementing new laws against the “coercion” of pregnant women to terminate their pregnancies.

During a regional government meeting, the acting health minister informed Turchak that state-run hospitals in Altai have instituted a mandatory counseling system prior to abortions.

On Monday, President Vladimir Putin highlighted Altai as one of the regions in Russia where the population shows a greater willingness to have children.

Russia is currently grappling with declining birth rates, a natural decrease in population, and increasing male mortality. In 2024, around 1.22 million births were recorded, which is only marginally higher than the all-time low of 1.21 million in…
