Russia and Ukraine have conducted an exchange of the remains of 1,029 soldiers who died in warfare, as reported by Kremlin advisor and chief negotiator Vladimir Medinsky on Friday.

Under an agreement established during peace discussions in Istanbul in June, Russia returned the remains of 1,003 Ukrainian soldiers and received 26 Russian soldiers’ bodies in return, Medinsky stated.

He posted two images on his Telegram account showing individuals in white hazmat suits surrounding refrigerated trucks.

Ukraine’s office responsible for prisoner of war management confirmed that it had received 1,003 bodies, noting that law enforcement officials planned to investigate and identify the remains.

Additionally, the Ukrainian office stated that the Red Cross had assisted in the repatriation process.

As of November, Ukraine had received no fewer than 15,000 repatriated remains from Russia since the onset of the full-scale invasion, according to publicly accessible data.

The repatriation of deceased soldiers and the exchange of prisoners of war have emerged as some of the few collaborative efforts between the two nations since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

During discussions in Istanbul, Moscow and Kyiv had consented to exchange the remains of 6,000 soldiers each. They also agreed on a large-scale prisoner swap but were unable to establish a ceasefire.
