On Friday, St. Petersburg inaugurated two metro stations, marking the first phase of a new metro line.
The Yugo-Zapadnaya and Putilovskaya stations represent the beginning and end of the Krasnoselsk-Kalininskaya Line, highlighted in brown on the city’s metro map. Currently, these stations serve as the terminal points in the southwestern part of St. Petersburg.
“Yugo-Zapadnaya is a station that has been highly anticipated. It caters to an area inhabited by nearly 500,000 residents,” stated St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov during the opening ceremony. “It is essential to connect this neighborhood to the city center. Putilovskaya is also crucial for us.”
Putilovskaya provides a transfer option to the Kirovsky Zavod station on the red line. There are plans to extend the new line from Putilovskaya further northeast to connect with Obovody Kanal, a stop on the purple line.
Construction of the Krasnoselsk-Kalininskaya Line commenced in 2015, with expectations for its completion stretching towards the end of the decade, aiming for a full line by 2030.
This opening follows the debut of the Gorny Institut station in December 2024, which was the first new metro station in St. Petersburg since 2019.
The St. Petersburg metro system currently features six lines and 75 stations. In recent years, its expansion has been gradual, especially when compared to the rapid development of the metro system in Moscow.
