Two youngsters have been saved after becoming stranded on an island in a frigid pond located in east London.
On Wednesday afternoon, they were unable to get back to the shore of Hollow Pond in Leytonstone due to melting ice hazards.
Firefighters from Leyton, Walthamstow, and East Ham stations employed inflatable rescue boats and specialized water rescue gear to reach the children, successfully bringing them to safety by 17:35 GMT.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) reported that it had encountered over 14 incidents related to ice in the previous week, leading to urgent warnings being issued.
These incidents included dogs plunging into frozen ponds in areas such as Southgate, Dulwich, and Romford, kids playing on ice-covered lakes in Enfield and Ham, and two individuals stuck on a frozen lake in Chingford while attempting to rescue a dog.
Pat Goulbourne, Assistant Commissioner of the LFB, emphasized the need for caution: “I’m urging residents of London to exercise heightened awareness and steer clear of the ice.
“Venturing onto frozen ponds or lakes presents significant dangers. Never take for granted that the ice will be resilient enough to hold your weight.
“While it may appear solid enough to walk on, the thickness can vary tremendously, particularly as you move away from the edges where it is generally thinner.
“A fall into icy waters greatly increases the risk of hypothermia, which can be life-threatening.”
