On Wednesday, Russia’s Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of deploying drones that targeted a Greek-owned oil tanker off the coast of the Black Sea the previous day, marking the latest incident in a series of maritime assaults in the area.
According to Greek authorities, on Tuesday, drones struck two vessels owned by Greece, the Matilda and the Delta Harmony, with one of them scheduled to load Kazakh oil near Russian waters.
The Defense Ministry of Russia reported that the Matilda, which flies the Maltese flag, was hit by two Ukrainian drones approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Anapa in the southern Krasnodar region.
The statement did not mention the Delta Harmony, and Ukraine has not yet responded to these accusations.
Over the past year, Ukraine has increasingly focused on attacking Russian energy facilities and supply routes with drone strikes, asserting these actions are justified retaliation for Russia’s large-scale invasion and its ongoing occupation of Ukrainian territory.
Kazakhstan and Greece each issued separate statements condemning the attack on Wednesday.
Kazakhstan’s Foreign Ministry expressed serious concern regarding the strikes on “three tankers heading to the marine terminal of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium in the Black Sea.”
“The rising frequency of such events underscores the escalating risks to the operation of international energy infrastructure,” the ministry noted.
