The Russian Embassy in Cyprus announced on Monday that one of its personnel had passed away the previous week, with local news reports indicating that suicide may have been the cause.
In their statement, the embassy referenced the deceased, identified only as A.V. Panov, who died on January 8. They characterized his death as a “deep personal tragedy for his family and loved ones.”
The embassy did not provide details regarding the circumstances of Panov’s death but mentioned that efforts were being made to bring his body back to Russia.
Cypriot media outlets, referencing unnamed police sources, reported that the diplomat had hanged himself in his office. Allegedly, Panov left a note, though the embassy has not shared it with law enforcement and stated it would be sent to Moscow for consideration.
Moreover, reports suggest that diplomatic personnel restricted local investigators from accessing the embassy to inspect the area where Panov was said to have taken his life. According to unconfirmed reports, his remains were transferred to the police within the embassy’s courtyard.
This tragic event occurred just one day after Russian businessman Vladislav Baumgertner, former CEO of the fertilizer company Uralkali, was reported missing in Cyprus.
Local authorities, along with volunteers, initiated a search for Baumgertner on Sunday. It remains unclear whether there is any connection between Panov’s death and Baumgertner’s disappearance.
