The Polish government has accused Russia of executing a cyberattack on the nation’s power grid last month, which they assert nearly triggered a nationwide blackout.
On Tuesday, Energy Minister Miłosz Motyka informed journalists that the attack aimed to disrupt the communication between renewable energy facilities and power distribution operators in late December.
Motyka indicated that this incident represents a departure from previous cyberattacks, which typically targeted traditional power plants or high-voltage transmission systems.
Later, Poland’s Digital Affairs Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski mentioned in a local radio broadcast that the country was “extremely close to experiencing a blackout” before the cyber assault was prevented.
He was quoted saying, “We have never faced an attack of this nature before. For the first time, multiple locations were simultaneously targeted.”
Gawkowski described the cyberattack as akin to “digital tanks” and suggested it was orchestrated by Moscow.
“Everything points to Russian sabotage, as it should be referred to, intended to destabilize the situation in Poland,” he stated.
Russia has yet to respond to these accusations.
The Polish Ministry of Digital Affairs reported that a substantial number of the approximately 170,000 cyber incidents documented in the first three quarters of 2025 can be traced back to state-sponsored Russian actors.
