Flagstaff, Arizona – A routine call for air support turned deadly when an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter crashed near an active shooting scene, claiming the lives of its pilot and trooper-paramedic.[1][2]

Officers from the Flagstaff Police Department responded to reports of an armed suspect in a neighborhood north of Route 66 around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The situation quickly escalated into an officer-involved shooting that involved three police officers and a Department of Public Safety employee.[3] The suspect fired at law enforcement, prompting a fierce exchange of gunfire. Amid the danger, officers rescued a victim caught in the crossfire, shielding her from harm.[4]

Flagstaff Police Chief Sean Connolly praised his team’s bravery during a Thursday morning briefing. The officers placed themselves between the gunfire and the victim, ensuring her safety. Their actions contained the threat effectively, though the night ended in profound loss.[4]

Aerial Support Ends in Fiery Crash

The Arizona DPS dispatched a Ranger helicopter, a Bell 407 model manufactured in 2004, to provide tactical air support to ground units.
