Off California’s Catalina Island, a young woman’s vacation turned tragic when she fell from her cruise ship stateroom balcony to a deck below. Briana Miller, 24, lost her life early Monday morning aboard the Carnival Firenze, a voyage that had just begun from Long Beach. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner released her identity on Thursday, prompting renewed focus on the circumstances of the incident.[1][2]
Early Morning Tragedy Strikes Shortly After Departure
The Carnival Firenze had set sail from Long Beach the previous evening, several hours behind schedule, on a four-night itinerary that included stops at Catalina Island and Ensenada, Mexico. Around 2 a.m. Monday, within hours of departure, Miller apparently went over the railing of her stateroom balcony.[3] She landed on a lower deck, and crew members responded immediately after her family alerted them to the situation.
Passengers aboard the approximately 1,000-foot Italian-themed vessel described the shock rippling through the ship. One guest, Amber Reinhold, noted the balcony’s railing reached up to her rib cage, given her height of 5 feet 9 inches. “In order to fall over this railing… you would have to be sitting on the railing,” she said.[1] Details remained sparse at first, with staff confirming only that a young woman had fallen from her balcony…
