Las Vegas – Budget-conscious visitors and residents streamed into Harry Reid International Airport on May 2, 2026, only to find Spirit Airlines’ ticket counters abandoned and flights canceled without warning.[1][2] The ultra-low-cost carrier, which had operated for 34 years and served as the eighth-busiest airline at the airport, ceased all operations overnight, stranding thousands and reshaping the local travel landscape.[3] Experts noted that Spirit’s presence had long pressured competitors to maintain lower fares, a dynamic now poised to shift dramatically.[4]

End of an Era for the Ultra-Low-Cost Pioneer

Spirit Airlines traced its roots to a Michigan trucking firm in the 1960s before pivoting to charter flights and eventually adopting a bare-bones, Ryanair-inspired model in the 2000s.[4] The carrier disrupted the industry by slashing base fares and charging for extras, a strategy that generated profits under former CEO Ben Baldanza but faltered amid post-pandemic challenges. Rising labor costs, engine issues, and fierce competition at hubs like Las Vegas eroded its edge.
