Two women who contacted authorities about their adopted children, ages 8 and 10, were arrested after the youngsters told officers they had fled to escape ongoing physical mistreatment. The case has prompted Franklin County officials to place four additional children from the household into protective custody while the criminal proceedings move forward.

The Initial Report and Swift Discovery

The sequence began around 11 p.m. when Julie Barfield, 47, and Kim Brown-Barfield, 43, noticed the two children were no longer at their residence on Pine Street in south Columbus. Brown-Barfield spent roughly two hours driving through the neighborhood before notifying police that the children were missing.

Deputies from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office soon located the pair on a nearby street after a resident flagged them down. The children immediately explained to the deputy that they had left home because of physical abuse by their parents. One child was observed with a bloody lip and marks on the stomach, injuries the youngster attributed to being slammed into a wall earlier that day.
