Lady Annabel Goldsmith, a prominent social figure and activist known for inspiring the name of a renowned London nightclub from the 1960s, has passed away at the age of 91.
The mother of six children from two marriages, Lady Annabel’s offspring include Zac, who served as the Conservative MP for Richmond Park for eight years and ran for the mayoralty of London in 2016.
Her youngest son, Ben, described her as “truly irreplaceable.” He expressed, “We are devastated, not for her sake—she led an exceptional and fulfilling life—but for ourselves, as we are left with a tremendous void in our lives.”
Mr. Goldsmith shared, “I talked to her every day for 45 years. She was always there for me, and we had a deep love for one another. I will miss her profoundly.”
Annabel’s, which was established by her first husband in 1963 and stands as one of the first modern nightclubs in London, was named in her honor. It became a hotspot for the British elite and celebrities throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
Born in London in 1934 to an Anglo-Irish noble family, Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart was the daughter of Viscount Castlereagh, who would later ascend to become the 8th Marquess of Londonderry.
She became Lady Annabel in February 1949, following her father’s elevation to marquess.
With her first husband, hospitality tycoon Mark Birley, Lady Annabel had three children: Rupert, Robin, and India Jane; their marriage lasted from 1954 until 1979.
