LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Tribal communities throughout Nevada are feeling the consequences of the federal government shutdown.
The Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada’s Girls, Infants, and Kids Program, or WIC, spoke with 8 Information Now and stated this system is safe till the tip of November, however cash is operating out.
On October 8, its workplaces closed briefly due to a current federal funding lapse, however have since reopened.
Its program director, Blanca Plascencia-Reyna, stated if no funding comes within the subsequent few days, their workers can be impacted.
“It will be just roughly me, just handling like any emails, any, you know, calls, just getting the status of it,” she stated. “But you know we’re hopeful in the next couple of days that we receive any funding from USDA just to keep operations going.”
Plascencia-Reyna added that this system serves 28 tribal communities with 546 recipients throughout Nevada and round 125 in Las Vegas.
“I’m hopeful that, you know, even maybe the state can help us provide some funding,” she stated. “It’s already a barrier for them (tribal communities) to go to the stores and, you know, find fresh fruits and products, things like that.”
She defined how households on the reservations face boundaries to get to locations.
“You know, Ely is, is four hours away in the desert and some of our reservations [travel through] dirt roads when the weather is hazardous,” she stated.
