A significant power outage left many residents in the Sakhalin region of Russia’s Far East without electricity for a large part of Tuesday, prompting engineers to work swiftly to restore service.

According to Sakhalinenergo, which is part of the RusHydro energy group, the disruption was caused by a damaged lightning protection cable that fell onto a high-voltage power line early in the morning.

Witnesses described seeing a brilliant flash of light just before the electricity cut out.

The downed cable activated the system’s automatic safety measures, causing the electrical grid of Sakhalin Island to separate into northern and southern segments, as reported by Sakhalinenergo.

Consequently, the main power plant in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk was forced to temporarily shut down, resulting in the regional capital and the majority of central and southern areas of the island losing access to electricity, heating, and water.

Rostekhnadzor, Russia’s industrial safety watchdog, intends to look into the details of the incident, as stated by the Interfax news agency.

Within a few hours, engineers began the process of reconnecting substations gradually to prevent overloading the system.

Pavel Yakovlev, the head of Sakhalinenergo, confirmed that the island’s “high-voltage backbone” is functioning normally again, with teams now concentrating on repairing the remaining low-voltage issues.

Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or significant damage to infrastructure.
