Staff at the Metropolitan Police call centre are poised to strike on New Year’s Eve due to a pay dispute.
The trade union Unite announced that 175 of its members plan to leave their posts on one of the busiest nights of the year for emergency services, citing a lack of a pay increase from the Met for the current financial year.
Unite’s regional officer, Keith Henderson, remarked, “While we understand that London residents may be worried about a strike on New Year’s Eve, our members feel compelled to take this action in their pursuit of a just pay rise.”
The Metropolitan Police has been contacted for a statement.
The individuals participating in the strike are call centre operators for the Met, responsible for logging crime reports, as well as technicians and office personnel who maintain and dispatch police vehicles, including cars and motorcycles.
The planned strike is set to begin at 06:00 GMT on December 31 and will last for 25 hours.
Unite indicated that its members voted in favor of striking due to the absence of a pay increase for 2025-26 from the Met. This comes in stark contrast to the 4.2% pay rise granted to police officers and the similar pay increases awarded to both police officers and staff in other UK police forces.
The union stated that the Met has suggested two preliminary offers: a “below-RPI pay increase” of 3.8% or a conditional 4.2% increase tied to significant reductions in working conditions.
